The TOEFL exam measures four key English skills – Reading, Listening, Speaking and writing in a university – level setting. You can take the TOEFL IBT (Internet – Based Test) at a test centre or at home. The test focuses on academic English used in a higher education setting, with 100% academic content and integrated tasks. The total duration of the TOEFL exam is 116 minutes and scores are out of 120.

Format

 The test is administered online (IBT) and consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

The test takes approximately 116 minutes to complete, with an additional 30 minutes for check – in.

Each section is scored out of 30, with a total score ranging from 0 to 120.

It consists of multiple – choice questions based on academic reading passages.

  • 2 passages, each 700 words

It includes academic lectures and campus conversations with multiple – choice questions.

    • 3 lectures, some with classroom discussion, each 3-5 minutes, 6 questions each
    • 2 conversations, each 3 minutes, 5 questions each
    • Estimated timing: 36 minutes
    • Score scale: 0-30

Involves four tasks where you speak your responses into a microphone

    • 4 tasks
    • 1 independent task to express an opinion on a familiar topic
    • 3 integrated tasks based on what is read and heard
    • Up to 30 seconds to prepare the response, up to 1 minute to respond
    • Estimated timing: 16 minutes
    • Score scale: 0-30

Includes two tasks where you type your responses into the computer

  • 2 tasks
  • 120-minute integrated task based on what is read and heard
  • 110-minute writing for an academic discussion task to state and support an opinion in an online classroom discussion
  • Estimated timing: 29 minutes
  • Score scale: 0-30

Administration and testing options

The TOEFL IBT test is offered two ways:

  • TOEFL IBT test on a computer at an authorised test centre
  • TOEFL IDP home addition on a computer at home, monitored by a live human protector
  • TOEFL IBT paper addition test will no longer be offered after January 20, 2024 but prepare edition test scores remain valid and accepted for two years after the test date.

Scoring

  • The total score possible is 0-120
  • Responses from the speaking & writing sessions are scored by of combination of AI scoring & ETS certified raters.
  • Scored -delivery time varies depending on how the test taker took the test & how score recipients received scores

Eligibility

  • No age limit
  • Student should complete at least 10+2 level of education from a recognised board
  • You will need a valid, government issued photo id to take the test
  • If your 15 or younger you may need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • The cost of TOEFL IBT exam fees is 16900/-
  • Average score for the TOEFL IBT is about 74.2 for students & 82.6 for graduate students, the highest passing score is 630, while the lowest one is around 450 points.
